Comfrey (Symphytum officinale)

Comfrey is a plant with big leaves with a lot of hair and perennial stem. It grows fast and its root is used as it contains allantoin and mucilage.

Blooming

It has scarce flowers, pale yellow in color. They grow in the endings. Their corolla is of tubular form from 1 to 2 cm. It blooms in June. The variety Symphytum Tuberosum has the purple flower.

Location

Its habitat is localized in humid, shady meadows and forests near springs and streams. In general, it is located in low traffic and humid places, although it is also cultivated.

Traditional properties

It is a plant that is said to form new cells (generate them), heal wounds quickly and very well. Its roots are much used as it contains allantoin (derived from uric acid) that heals wounds, this compound is used in several antibiotics. It welds the bones.

It also contains a lot of mucilage, which is a viscous substance of greater or lesser consistency.

Traditionally it has been used to treat dislocations, blows, rheumatism, arthrosis, periostitis… It has a great anti-inflammatory power and is very soothing. That is why it is used in poultices or balms. It is also very effective in treating burns and skin diseases such as psoriasis. Its oil is very good for treating cracks and roughness in hands and feet.

It is a plant of great biological and ecological value, as it greatly enriches the land where it lives, while serving as excellent fodder for livestock. It is used to ripen the tomatoes and as a compost.

Comfrey dye

  • Place fresh roots (300 gr / liter) in a pot with alcohol. Leave it to macerate during 10 to 15 days. Filter and store (Abilia’s original recipe)
  • Internal dosis: 10 to 20 drops, take 3 times a day.
  • External used for treatment: sprains, rheumatism, osteoarthritis and sciatica.

Comfrey ointment

  • Put a handful of freshly crushed roots in 300 grams of oil and 60 grams of virgin wax in a double boiler for several hours. Let it macerate for 24 hours and then reheat before filtering. 
  • It is used for bruises, bumps, osteoarthritis, joint pain, skin cracks (including nipples), burns and anal fissures.

Comfrey oil

  • Macerate 200 grams of fresh plant in one liter of oil during 30 to 40 days in the sun. 
  • Apply to varicose veins, cellulite, burns, sprains and bone conditions.
